Recently, I hosted maths workshops at my local shopping center, Canelands.

The workshops were fully booked and as the week progressed, I started to understand why.

For starters, Number is the foundation of all mathematics.

For children to be successful in mathematics, they must have a terrific number sense.

Number sense involves many moving parts such as counting, one to one correspondence, understanding quantities, understanding numerals, understanding the function of zero, understanding the role of ten… and so on. Secondly, how you use it depends on a child’s age and curriculum level.

A child in grade one has to develop their number sense to 100

A child in grade two needs to know Number to 1000…

All children by the time they finish grade 4 should know their times tables by heart.
